FUCK THESE STUPID BURGER MEN

I started drawing the burger men of WONDERHILL in Summer of 2010 after I graduated with my design degree from a school in Dayton. I wanted to start animating something that I could move easily so simple wide open spaces seemed like the perfect place to go as far as the design would go. Once I had decided on this I went about drawing a few really dumb characters I think I was doing gross stupid Muppet looking characters first, this just wasn't working so I took a step back and actually thought about something that I would like to see. Then the idea came to me, a pair of stoner meat-headed buddies surrounded and trapped in world that wants to eat them.

Much later, around 7 months later, the characters that I was only drawing when I was stoned or feeling bored began to evolve to my friends Kyle Martin & Jeff Deane (they do the voices for- well Jeff and Kyle the burger men and are in this great Columbus band, Smart Girls) After these two burger heads became actual people in the real world. It was fucking awesome.

SOAKED MOIST UPDATE

For those uninitiated I've started editing an anthology- Soaked Moist. So far it is up to about 44 pages and counting. I put it together to show off the work of some really awesome cartoonists that I have been on projects with in the past and to show the work of a few other cartoonists I reached out to just because I love their work.

We should have a final line-up decided by the end of the month. Keep checking back.

WEEK 000 - Project: Ron Saks "Story"

I'm working on a story with the characters from the last project. The biggest note I got back was that the music video was WAY too long. I get that (it was supposed to be kind of experimental) but I cut down screen time to a minute. Here is the script. There is a short summary of the story at the very beginning.

FLESHEE FRIENDS

EPISODE 1 –“Fass Food”

CAST

CATHY (big tits)

MARK (floppy head)

KEVIN (head in his own ass)

BRANDON (blown up)

*SUMMARY: 1 MIN CARTOON

*KEVIN comes into the movie with his hands full of fast food. His girlfriend CATHY has put him on a diet when she comes around KEVIN panics and shoves the fast food up his ass. When CATHY leaves KEVIN tries to pull out the food but is unable. He then goes to find his friends MARK and BRANDON who adventure inside of his ass to find the food. They find his food shoved deep into a pile of crap. When they pull the food out of the impacted shit, his butt turns into that cave from the opening in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, they then have to scramble to get out before they are buried alive. They narrowly escape intact. We, the audience, learns that the power of friendship is stronger than anything in the world as the three buddies share a poo-stained meal.*

SCENE ONE

(Camera pans over KEVIN who is happily holding a sack of food and soda from NOM NOM BURGERS)

KEVIN

“I can’t wait for this greasy goodness!”

(KEVIN’S girlfriend CATHY is approaching)

CATHY

“Kevin! Do I smell fatty, fat junk food!?”

(KEVIN panics and shoves the food up his ass)

KEVIN

“No baby! You’re smelling things.”

CATHY

“You promised you’d stop eating that… it goes right to your thighs!”

(SHOT of KEVIN’S giant over-sized legs)

CATHY

“I’ll see your sexy ass later!”

(she licks his face and walks away)

KEVIN

“Later.”

SCENE TWO

(KEVIN strains to reach his food )

KEVIN

“Where is it?”

(KEVIN begins to panic as he cannot reach it.)

KEVIN

“Oh, God! I’m jammed up!”

(KEVIN sees his friends BRANDON and MARK)

KEVIN

“Fellas! I need your ASS-ISTANCE!”

MARK

“Whad up?”

BRANDON

“You’re super deep, bro.”

KEVIN

“Cathy came by and I had to stuff this delicious food up my ass because I’m on a diet.”

MARK

“What do you want us to do about it?”

KEVIN

“Could both of you guys go up and get it?”

BRANDON

“Dude, I have not been in any asses for like a long time.”

KEVIN

(Looking like a total puss)

“Please! I’ll give you some.”

BRANDON/ MARK

“DEAL!”

SCENE THREE

(BRANDON and MARK climb into KEVIN’s ass and venture inside with a flashlight to find his food jammed up in a big pile of crap)

BRANDON

“Dude, that shit is impacted.”

MARK

“Well, pull it out you dummy!”

(BRANDON yanks out the food from the shit. The entire butt begins to collapse.)

(EXTERIOR SHOT: KEVIN blasting a powerful stream of shit from his butt. BRANDON and MARK are shot out and land some feets away.)

BRANDON(covered in shit)

“Here’s the food, dude!”

(KEVIN grabs the food)

KEVIN

“Thank Christ!”

(KEVIN shoves the food into his mouth)

(The three of them sit down to a shit covered picnic)

KEVIN

“You guys are the best friends a little piggy like me could ask for!”

(The three hug.)

A note on Daily Drawings

Yo.

I'm going to put the daily drawing project on hiatus. I feel that it's no longer providing as much growth as it did and I need to focus on more projects that are creeping up in the offices of pbkain.com.

I haven't talked much about the cartoon that I started working on when I was in New York this summer (More to come in the future). Suffice it to say that I have about 10 scenes cleaned up and animated and the temp track for the animators is done. Right now we are working on putting together an animatic and enlisting the help of some hungry artists.

Along with that I'm working on a new comic probably like 8-10 pages or something. Just something crazy and gross.

Probably a shit load of other things coming.

I hoped for a productive 2011 and I got one.

Okay just to clear the air up from the critique from this morning. I will be putting together a short film with the four characters that will come out of this project so stayed toon'd for next week as I assemble these dickheads into something interesting.

Third week and I have come up with this. I didn't have a female character in mind i wanted to kind of keep it androgynous but i had this idea of a character inflating her breasts with her own arms and I squeezed out this. I've also been working on what the final film for this might look like. I'm planning on making the film a later project so I can really have some time to come up with something decent instead of trying to do everything with these characters in just one project.

Holy shit. This has been a busy week. Here is my second character. Pretty straight forward. The concept and design is pretty straight forward. All I had to do was to decide the concept. I always wanted to see a cartoon shove his head into his own ass. Maybe this is some kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

WEEK 001 - Project: Hiroshi Hayakawa "Menagerie"

Here it is. The first of these four characters. I came up with the idea of having them each do one very specific kind of movement. Almost, like a dance and less of a parade as I had originally set out.

Once I had figured on the movement that the character was going to do I came up with the look and color palette I like the feel and vibe of this dude, he's real creepy, odd, and hyper-real which is what I had set out originally to do.

I then went into flash and began breaking down the movement. Once I settled on the rough key poses I set out to clean this guy up. what I'm showing here is the completed animation broken down over a storyboard once I have the other three characters done I'm going to throw them all together into a neat little short film. Enjoy!

Hey Gang. I'm going to be doing these weekly posts for my Design For Media class at CCAD. I'm really stoked to see what comes out of this class.

Lets get right to it shall we…

Our first project to reference the artist Hiroshi Hayakawa to create either a project based on his works of Figure as Landscape or Menagerie. I chose to do an animation project. Here is the break down: I'm going to create over the next four weeks, four pieces of character animation and then putting them all together in a little parade of sorts.

The overall inspiration are those stupid intermission cartoons from movies that tell you to go buy over priced snacks from the concession stand (If you can recall it was lampooned in the Aqua Teen movie).

Bottom line: They gotta be really hyper-real and gross. I've been checking out the animators Devin Flynn and Igor Kovalyov a lot recently for inspiration as well as Ryan Larkin's, Walking (1968).

Lets hope for something weird.
